WHAT

Colour Psychology

I have done extensive work with colour phycology and the effect of surrounds on colours and textures. More importantly how its application can transform a room.

This brief was one of my first assignments; a south facing study and north facing guest bedroom. Pick a contrasting colour theme, that also took into consideration natural light.

STUDY:

By considering and optimising several factors; the south facing orientation of the room, colour psychology and my selection of décor and lighting I will be able to highly influence the impact and utility of the room.

In order to achieve bold contrast, I have chosen to go with a complementary colour scheme of blue and orange, with a base of bright crisp white.

The bright shade of white will help reflect any natural light which may enter the room also the various sources of artificial white task and accent light, which will be strategically placed within the room.  I intend to paint the ceilings, skirts and cornices white and have white built in storage covering the whole west wall.

Paired with bright white furniture and several gloss finished pieces the light will be well reflected around the room while also giving a clean and contemporary feel. The abundance of bright white will create the perfect base for the 3 remaining wall to be painted and striking navy blue.

Will vibrant orange décor and navy blue sinking into the walls I intend to create a study environment that draws you in with its warmth and comfort but at the same time is filled with life and motivation vibes.

With a blank canvas of unpainted wall be have the ability to do some colour sample to ensure we pick the ideal hue of navy blue and the perfect shade of white.

As you can see I have chosen quite a dark shade of navy. Even though the room is south facing and therefore already dark the other elements of the design work to brighten the space and provide adequate light while the navy will work physiologically in the room.

I have chosen blue and orange specifically to evoke certain emotions and reactions whilst in the room that will in turn help with productivity whilst you’re in the space.

Bleu is mentally soothing and associated with reliability, intelligence and responsibility the dark hue also creates a cosier feel, making it a calming positive area.

The navy will complement the orange, making it ‘pop’. Orange is a stimulating colour that is lively, motivation and sets a warm, energetic and successful mood.

The room with have sufficient storage, ample lighting, an ergonomic layout and relaxed feel to ensure optimal functionality.

Ultimately the colour palette gives you the feeling of empowerment and helps gives other who enter the room the same feeling towards the space, yourself and your work.

GUEST BEDROOM:

By taking advantage of the room orientation and northern natural light we have can turn the bedroom into a soothing retreat.

In the aim of achieving bold contrast I have chosen a split complementary colour scheme of blue, orange and pink with a base of a bright white.  By altering their saturation and values it will create quite a harmonious scheme.

Four white walls will help reflect the natural light that enters the room thru the north window, as will the mirrored dresser, reducing the need for lots of artificial light in the room.

Painting the interior of the door orange will give a burst of colour and energy for the intended guest without being to over powering.

Plenty of textiles and patterns will add to the comfort of the room and complement the plain walls and mirrored dresser.

My goal is to design a room that is pure and simple, but with burst of softer colours that inject fun and happiness for whomever enters.

Blue is a mental soothing colour that will help with sleep and inducing calmness. The hue I have chosen is less saturated so that when the guest walks into the room that are comforted by the colour as opposed to being stunned by it brightness.

Orange brings with it a sense of shelter and positivity, also feeling of freedom, perfect for making guests feel at home. Coupled with the happy, compassionate and nurturing vibes of the brighter pink I have been able to create a room that will feel like a home away from home.
